The term ‘self-generated’ imagery refers to images and videos created using handheld devices or webcams and then shared online. Children are often groomed or extorted into capturing images or videos of themselves and sharing them by someone who is not physically present in the room with them, for example, on live streams or in chat rooms. Sometimes children are completely unaware they are being recorded and that there is then a image or video of them being shared by abusers.
‘Toxic cocktail of risks’
- We sampled 202 images and videos; 130 images were of a single child and 72 contained multiple children.
- We were also able to set up an account for an underage creator, by using a 26-year-old’s identification, showing how the site’s age-verification process could be cheated.
- There can be a great deal of pressure for a young person to conform to social norms by engaging in sexting, and they may face coercion or manipulation if they go against the status quo.
- There are many reasons why someone would sexually harm a child, and children are kept safer when we are informed about what increases risk in their relationships and environment.
Caitlyn says it was stated “everywhere” on other online accounts that her daughter was 17. There is no obligation for a website to investigate, but OnlyFans told the BBC it checks social media when child porn verifying accounts. According to Firman, it is not only users and the government who must strive to minimize negative content and harmful effects on digital platforms. But the advent of generative artificial intelligence and easy-to-access tools like the ones used in the Pennsylvania case present a vexing new challenge for such efforts. JOHANNESBURG – Police say they cannot specify whether there’s an increase in crimes related to child pornography in the country. Some church congregations are now regularly being warned to watch out for signs of online child sex abuse. One teenager, Jhona – not her real name – told the BBC that as a child she and a friend were sexually exploited by the girl’s mother.
What we know about Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites and military commanders
The city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was shaken by revelations in December 2023 that two local teenage boys shared hundreds of nude images of girls in their community over a private chat on the social chat platform Discord. Witnesses said the photos easily could have been mistaken for real ones, but they were fake. The boys had used an artificial intelligence tool to superimpose real photos of girls’ faces onto sexually explicit images. We know that seeing images and videos of child sexual abuse online is upsetting. It is perhaps surprising that there is not a higher ratio of multiple child images in the ‘self-generated’ 3-6 age group. It would be easy to assume that a child of that age would only engage in this type of activity on camera with the encouragement in person of an older child, leading the way, but shockingly this is not what we have seen.
But BBC News tested the site’s “new exceptionally effective” system in April. While a fake ID did not work, we were able to set up an OnlyFans account for a 17-year-old by using her 26-year-old sister’s passport. Caitlyn says she doesn’t approve of her daughter using the site, but can see why people go on it, given how much money can be made. Leah had “big issues” growing up and missed a lot of education, Caitlyn says.
